I make reference to "purgatory" in this sermon. The Orthodox Church does NOT believe in Purgatory as understood by the Roman Catholic Church in the second millenium; by which I refer to a time of expiatory suffering for the redeemed to fit them for heaven. We do not find warrant for this in either Scripture or the Tradition of the Church. However that does not mean that Orthodoxy rejects any form of "intermediate state" between death and resurrection as Metropolitan Kallistsos Ware makes clear in "The Orthodox Church" (p. 255, Penguin 1993). Provided we make it clear how we understand the matter I see no reason to avoid the use of the word "purgatory" altogether. There is no space here to go into this in more detail but suffice to say that the words "Sheol" "Hades" "Gehenna" and "Hell" are not synonymous as Fr. Peter Chopelas has shown. I freely admit though that the more obvious sense of the place that Dives inhabits in the gospel is hell rather than anywhere else.
